These Amazing Hushpuppies are to-die-for—golf-ball-sized nuggets of golden goodness. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, these homemade Amazing Hushpuppies are one of the easiest side dish recipes you can make: it only takes a few minutes of fry time to make sweet, savory, and spicy treats. They’ll be ready in just 40 minutes so they’re ready whenever you are!


• 1 3/4 cups self-rising cornmeal mix • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour • 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1 1/2 cups milk • 3/4 cup buttermilk • 1 egg, beaten • 1/2 cup onions, minced • 1/4 cup canned diced jalapeno peppers • vegetable oil, for frying


Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal mix, flour, yellow cornmeal, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.

Step 2

Add the milk, buttermilk, and egg and mix until blended.

Step 3

Stir in the onion and jalapeno peppers.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet on the stove-top until it reaches 370 degrees F.

Step 5

Carefully drop the batter by level tablespoonfuls into the hot oil.

Step 6

Fry, turning once during the cooking process, until the hushpuppies are golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.

Step 7

Drain on paper towels.
